Progressives for Three Palms St Lucia

Progressives for Three Palms St Lucia

The painting is a rarity for me. It is a plein air study done in my art studio and not on site. My partner Roland and I went to St Lucia and the cruise ship arranged a tour of a water view estate overlooking the harbor where our cruise ship was in port. The view was spectacular and I took many photos. The background started with opposing colors on the color wheel: orange sky, pink foliage etc. then, I applied correct colors and values in washes so the background was peeking through. At the bottom I used my imagination and  drew in a stream with bushes painted in red. I used X’s and 0’s as a way of creating shadows. The red limbs were a technique I lifted from V. Van Gogh’s apple orchard paintings.
